Women's Rights Movemnet

Women rights have grown a lot through the 1800's, where there were many things that they couldn't do or were expected to do. All women back then had in-house jobs that had to deal with "safe" things.

To be a women, they had to have four things; purity, piety, submissiveness, and domesticity. These are basically saying that women should have been pure until marriage, worked at home, not spoken foully, and have been religious. This connects to women staying in the "private sphere" which was the home, safe and soft enough for women to work in. On the contrary, men worked in the "public sphere" which was outside of the home, tough, violent and trouble just like men should be.

In the 1800's, the main concern for women was suffrage along with other small rights they were asking for. The Declaration of Rights and Sentiments set them in the right track for what all women were asking for. This document made the first women's rights convention to be organized by women. It was like the Declaration of Independence because both were asking for some type of freedom in their own way. Women's suffrage was controversial at the time because many thought that if women voted, they would just vote the way their husband would. They didn't see a point in letting women vote if it was just going to be the same vote as their husband's.

In class there were a lot of similar demands from the different groups, many of them being about suffrage. Our groups demands were public speaking, voting for women, abolish slavery, possession of property, no more abuse and lastly more education for women. There were many demands with other groups that overlapped ours but there were also a few that were specific to only that group. Out of all discussed in class, I believe that the most important would be no more abuse because no one should be treated like that no matter what race or sex you are. This still goes on today and is a severe problem even though it is against the law.

Although we have gotten far in women rights and other rights, there are still many problems in the world that have been going on for a while. But women have gotten their main concern from the 1800's which was the ability to vote like men were able to.
